As an urban congregation, we live and minister in the midst of great need in the city. We carry out our outreach ministries in cooperation with other congregations as much as possible.

The need is always greater than available resources. We thank God for making our outreach ministry possible! Our joint outreach ministry is called Isaiah 58 Ministries and is housed in our building. After 37 years of ministry Compton Heights Christian Church (CHCC) member, Rev. Millie Slack retired in August 2006.

The new Executive Director of Isaiah 58 Ministries is
the Rev. Brenda Booth, a minister of the CHCC, Disciples
of Christ.

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them and not to hide yourself from your own kin? . . . you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of the streets to live in.
– Isaiah 58: 6-7, 12b

Interracial Dialogue Group Meeting
The 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Church Library,
this group discusses the hard issues of racism in our lives and our world.

We are committed to build true relationship with
each other across our differences of race, culture
and experience.

Food Pantry
The Director of the Hunger Program is Raymond Sutton,
a deacon in our congregation. The Food Pantry is open
10-1:00, Monday thru Friday. Fresh produce is available on Friday mornings. We collect food each Sunday as a part of our offering in worship and make additional financial contributions to help stock the pantry. A variety of volunteers help to staff the pantry daily.

Matthew 25 Emergency Assistance Fund
The Administrator of the Matthew 25 Fund, Ms. Alberta Moore, works with persons in need and directly with utility companies to prevent utilities from being turned off and with rental properties to avoid evictions. She also works with persons to help with budgeting and planning.

Clothing Room
The Clothing Room is open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Volunteers sort donated clothing and help persons find the clothing they need.

Health Screening
With the services of local Parish Nurses and contributions of local hospitals, we are able to do regular health screenings, and offer free flu shots. On occasion we are able to help persons to have prescriptions filled.

Community Youth Program
A weekday evening program for Middle School and High School youth meets twice a month. The program usually involves some 30 neighborhood youth in educational programs, fun events, and outreach projects.

Employment Assistance
We cooperate in a community employment program called Near Southside Employment Coalition.

An employment counselor, Rev. Kim Payne, is available at the church monthly.

Summer Evening Family Program
Held at Tyler Place Presbyterian Church two blocks
from CHCC, this eight-week program for families in the community involves a meal and a variety of events.

This includes storytellers, movies, crafts, educational conversations for parents, karaoke and games. Each evening closes with an informal time of worship.

Disciples Outreach
Through Disciples Mission Fund, we join with other congregations in supporting:

• Leadership Development for Youth and Young Adults

• Seminary Education for New Ministers

• Health and Social Services Programs for elders, children and youth at risk, persons with mental and physical disabilities.

Members of our congregation serve on our Region’s Anti-Racism/Pro-Reconciliation Team, Area Ministry Board, Olive Branch Board (a residential support and education program for homeless pregnant teenagers), and other outreach ministries.

Through our giving to “Reconciliation Mission”, we work to end racism in our community and across the country.

Global Outreach
Through our giving to Disciples Mission Fund, we support Global Mission Partners in countries throughout the world. Through our giving to “Week of Compassion” we take part in the relief and development ministries of the Church, reaching out to people across the world in natural disasters, war, famine, drought, and devastating poverty.
